Saturday 6th March 10

A funny day, didn't get up til 10 and had a moochy day, various things outside including cutting back some of last year's now dead growth, filling more compost bin with this and greengrocer's stuff, riddling another 9 carrier bags full of good mature compost, cutting up some hedge which our neighbour has taken out so the wall/fence can be constructed... I cut off the tops and whippy bits and they'll be shredded, and the sticks I chopped up into lengths and put them in wooden fruit trays where they'll dry and be ready for kindling next winter.

I did the usual rounds of washing up and home-based things, attempting to be a good Daddy type things... and in fact this did work during the evening as I invited them to watch The End Of The Line with me, and my eldest took it all in and we had some interesting conversations afterwards about algae and oxygen and dietary choices and more. Neither of them have ever eaten seafood, and I haven't since my early 20s when I went to Crete and had octopus. So I watched the programme with some degree of contempt of all the people who eat fish and seafood and don't need to, who don't care that half of it is 'stolen' and falls outside quotas, and that the people who set the quotas ignore the scientists who are telling them to set smaller quotas to conserve stocks. I get quite angry, as the seas and oceans are a shared resource and I want them left in good a condition... but most people don't care, they are selfish. Selfish for shellfish.

But, hey, I do my best, and very rarely preach, hardly ever say 'should'. I just do what I think is right. And who's to say who's wrong or who's right on any particular issue?

Tuesday 20th October 09

I enjoyed today as I visited my friend Ann for the first time in ages. She had requested some compost as she's just prepared a little patch of land for growing things in.

So I took 5 sacks of well rotted compost in my trailer over to Clememthorpe, and also some freegan Masala tea, freegan Saudi biscuits and a small bag of apple rings. I had a coffee and chat, met her handyman who was replacing a Velux window.

After this I went over to Millers Yard to pick up 5 sacks of orange halves, which I took to St Nicks. I collected my tin bath from here, as I left it there after Apple Day.

Home for lunch.

During the afternoon I finished building the logpile outside the front door.

And during the evening I watched The End Of The Line on More4, as well as playing Scrabble on facebook and doing the washing up.

Monday 8th June 09

A relatively slow start to the day but awaiting our friend Justin coming round to look at a malfunctioning plug socket, one of the rocker switches has been, on occasion, not switching off.. so definitely time to replace it.

Moving some furniture to allow access meant doing some cleaning, and I lit the stove to do a large pile of washing up. I also blanched about 5 bags of grapes and put them on the tray balanced on the pan of washing up water to dry. So a quite domestic day.

We did spend quite a bit of time with the Euro Election results, which in the UK at least are quite disturbing. Glad our two Greens were re-elected, very unhappy that the electorate in two areas think that the British National Party are worth voting for. Do they not realise that these people are Nazis? Griffin has even been convicted and put in Jail for racist activity! I am ashamed that the people of Yorkshire and Humberside have voted in Andrew Brons (there's a Teutonic name!) and he doesn't represent my views. Not In My Name!

I did a little bit of stacking and hedge cutting then shredding before going out to see the first showing of The End of the Line at City Screen. This was quite disturbing. As I don't eat fish, and haven't for 25 years, I feel I'm doing my bit to stop the devastation of our oceans... but there is a lot more I could be doing. One thing I'll do is to write a review for my Community Care blog... I haven't written a blog for them for 2 or 3 weeks so it's about time to do one!
